Hi everyone,
I went to my fibro doctor today. Long story short, she does not have a clue about Lyme disease. She could barely interpret the test results. Basically one of the tests was positive, another was inconclusive, another one was negative. There might have been ther tests but honestly I was so lost. My mom has gone over and over the results and has summarized what they mean to me.
Most Canadian doctors will look at my test results and say no, you don't have Lyme disease. They may think I had it at one point, but I'm over it and any symptoms are lasting damage done by the bacteria.
For research I have done (just kidding, it's all done by my mother and then reiterated to me while I half listen-- for the record half listening is all I'm capable of doing due to brain fog). Some American doctors or "Lyme Literate" doctors will say a negative test does not mean you do not have Lyme. I assume they would interpret my test results as having Lyme and treat it with antibiotics.
In Canada, doxycycline, the antibiotic used to treat lyme, can only be prescribed for 4 weeks. My fibro doctor has given me a prescription for it for 4 weeks, although she has no idea how it will go. My mom doesn't want me to take the antibiotic until we have another opinion. I just want to start it and see how it goes. Of course, all i see is my symptoms getting worse and worse each day and feeling the pain increase. I'm scared the neurological symptoms are going to get worse and I'll end up unable to talk or walk or something. (Which has happened to people we know with untreated lyme)
A friend of a friend of a friend of a friend (or someone), and a few other people have recommended a
doctor in New York that got Lyme while she was living in Quebec and has dedicated her practice to treating Lyme. Unfortunately she's currently taking appointments for January. You all know I hoped to be back at school by then so I am very very discouraged. This doctor has trained a naturopath that works in Georgetown though, so we're trying to get an appointment with her.
So overall, a very frustrating day. I feel like we're moving backwards while my symptoms are progressing in fast forward.
